Machinery Finance That Keeps Your Business Producing

Whether it's a CNC router, a packaging line or a workshop full of gear, machinery finance spreads the cost so your cash stays in the business.

Plant and machinery

What is machinery finance and who uses it?

Machinery finance covers the heavy-duty gear businesses rely on to make, cut, pack, print and build. Joinery shops finance edge banders and CNC routers, food producers finance mixers and filling lines, engineering workshops finance lathes, presses and welders, and print businesses finance large-format machines. If it earns income and holds value, it can usually be financed.

The appeal is simple. Paying cash for a major machine can drain the working capital you need for wages, stock and the next order. Financing it lets the machine pay for itself over time from the extra work it produces, while your bank balance stays healthy for everything else. It also means you can buy the right machine for the job, rather than the cheapest one you can afford in cash today.

Urgency comes into it more often than people expect. A spindle seizes, a production line stops, or a big order arrives that the old machine simply can't keep up with. Loanster is set up for those moments, with a real person looking at your situation and the aim of apply today, cashed up tomorrow.

Machinery finance is a loan or lease that funds production, workshop or industrial machinery, usually secured against the machine itself. It can cover new or used equipment from dealers, importers or private sellers. Approval can move quickly when the tax invoice, ID and recent bank statements are ready, and next-business-day settlement is possible for straightforward applications.

Ways to fund new machinery

Choose based on ownership, cash flow and how the asset fits your plans.

Chattel mortgage

You own the machine from day one, with the lender holding security until the loan is repaid.

Lease or rental

The lender owns the machine and you pay to use it, which can make upgrading easier when technology moves on.

Sale and leaseback

Already own your machinery outright? Refinancing it can release cash for growth or an urgent bill.

What machinery can I finance?

Most income-producing machinery qualifies. Lenders are most comfortable with well-known brands that have an established resale market, and less comfortable with highly customised equipment that only suits one business.

Specialised or imported machines can still be financed, but expect a few more questions about the supplier, delivery and installation. For production-heavy businesses, our page on manufacturing equipment finance goes deeper.

  • CNC routers, lathes, mills and laser cutters
  • Presses, brakes, guillotines and welders
  • Packaging, labelling and filling lines
  • Commercial printing and signage machines
  • Compressors, generators and workshop plant

My production machine has stopped. How fast can I replace it?

Start with the supplier. Get a written quote or tax invoice, confirm delivery and installation timing, and ask whether they need a deposit to hold the machine. With that document, ID and recent bank statements, approval can move fast and next-business-day settlement is possible on a straightforward deal.

If the replacement comes from overseas, the lead time may be weeks regardless of how quickly finance settles. In that case, consider hiring a stop-gap machine and financing the permanent replacement on a sensible timeline. Our guide to handling an urgent equipment breakdown covers the options.

Can I finance machinery that needs installation?

Yes, though it changes how settlement works. Some lenders pay the supplier in stages, such as a deposit on order and the balance once the machine is installed and running. Others pay in full on delivery.

Talk to your supplier about their payment terms early, so the finance can be structured to match. If installation also involves electrical work or building changes, those costs can sometimes be included in the finance, or covered separately with a fit-out loan.

Is used machinery harder to finance?

A little, but it's common. The lender will want the age, condition and serial numbers, and for private sales, proof of ownership and confirmation that no finance is owing. Machinery from auctions can also be financed, though timing is tight, so line up pre-approval before bidding.

Picture a cabinet maker who finds a near-new edge bander through an industry contact. The seller has the original purchase invoice and a payout letter from their existing lender, so the new lender can pay out the old finance and the seller in one settlement. With that paperwork in hand, a private deal can move nearly as fast as a dealer one. Read more about the checks on our used equipment finance page.

What if my credit isn't perfect?

Because the machine is security, a less-than-perfect credit file doesn't automatically mean no. Lenders weigh the strength of the trading business, the value of the asset, and the story behind any defaults. ATO debt is considered case by case.

If the machine is unusual or old and the credit history is patchy, a property-secured business loan may be a better fit. Those range from $20,000 to $5,000,000 against residential or commercial property.

How does GST work on machinery finance?

GST is usually included in the purchase price on the supplier's tax invoice, and many lenders will finance the full GST-inclusive amount. How and when you claim the GST credit depends on your registration, accounting method and finance structure.

Tax treatment of machinery, including depreciation and any write-off rules, changes over time, so talk to your accountant before you sign. They can tell you which structure works best for your situation.

Common questions

Machinery Finance That Keeps Your Business Producing FAQs

Can I finance machinery bought from overseas?

It's possible, though lenders may want more detail on the supplier, shipping and installation. Some will pay in stages to match the supplier's terms.

Can I bundle several machines into one finance contract?

Often, yes. Combining several items on one invoice or contract keeps the paperwork simpler and means one approval rather than several.

Do I need financial statements for machinery finance?

For smaller and straightforward deals, bank statements and ID may be enough. Larger amounts usually need recent financial statements or BAS.

Can I finance installation and freight costs?

Sometimes. If they appear on the supplier's tax invoice, many lenders will include them. Separate contractor costs may need a different funding approach.

What happens at the end of a machinery lease?

Depending on the contract, you may pay the residual and keep the machine, upgrade to a newer one, or hand it back. Check the end-of-term options before you sign.

Can I finance machinery bought at auction?

Yes, but auction timelines are tight. Arrange pre-approval before bidding so the lender can settle quickly once you win.
