Ute and Van Finance for Tradies

Your ute or van is your office, your storeroom and your billboard. When it is off the road, so is your income.

No vehicle, no work

What do you do when the work ute dies on a Monday?

For most tradies, the vehicle is the business. The tools live in it, the materials ride in it and every quote starts with getting to site. When the gearbox goes, the van is written off or it simply cannot handle the workload any more, the clock starts ticking on lost jobs.

Tradie ute and van finance is a business loan or lease secured by the vehicle itself. Because utes and vans are popular, easy to value and quick to resell, lenders understand them well, which helps applications move quickly.

Whether you are a first-year sparky on your own ABN or a builder adding a third van to the fleet, the aim is the same: get a reliable vehicle working for you as soon as possible, on repayments your cash flow can carry.

Tradie ute and van finance is a business vehicle loan, usually a chattel mortgage, used by electricians, plumbers, carpenters and other trades to buy a work vehicle. The vehicle secures the loan, so approval can be fast. With the invoice, licence and recent bank statements ready, next-business-day settlement is possible for straightforward applications.

Choosing a structure

Popular ways tradies finance a vehicle

The right fit depends on how you run your business and how long you keep a vehicle.

Chattel mortgage

The business owns the ute or van from day one, with the lender holding security. The go-to option for most tradies.

Finance lease

The lender owns the vehicle and leases it to you with a residual at the end. Some trades prefer this for fleet vans they swap regularly.

Personal car loan

If the vehicle is mainly for private use, a consumer ute loan may be more appropriate than business finance.

How fast can I get finance for a work ute or van?

Very quickly, if you are organised. Approval and settlement can move fast when the tax invoice or dealer quote, your driver licence and recent bank statements are ready, and next-business-day settlement is possible for straightforward applications.

Think of a plumber whose van is towed away after a collision on Thursday morning. If they find a suitable replacement at a dealer that afternoon and send the paperwork through straight away, it is realistic to be back on the tools early the following week. Need it that fast? Can I finance a ute with a fit-out, canopy or racking?

Yes. Most lenders will include accessories and fit-outs that are bought with the vehicle and shown on the invoice. That can make a big difference to cash flow, because a serious tray, canopy or van fit-out can add a lot to the total cost.

  • Aluminium trays and service bodies
  • Canopies, toolboxes and drawer systems
  • Van shelving, racking and partitions
  • Roof racks, ladder racks and towbars
  • Dual-battery systems, lighting and inverters
  • Signwriting, when it is included on the invoice

Can I get ute finance as a new sole trader?

Often, yes. Lenders see plenty of tradies who have just left an employer to go out on their own. A recent ABN is not automatically a problem, especially if you can show steady work through your bank statements, a trade licence and some history in the industry.

A deposit or trade-in can help when the ABN is very new. For broader funding ideas, see our pages on sole trader loans and tradie business loans.

Should I buy new or used?

A new ute or van gives you warranty and fewer surprises, which matters when downtime costs money. A good used vehicle can be cheaper and sometimes available on the spot. Lenders fund both, from dealers and, in many cases, private sellers.

On private sales, expect the lender to check the vehicle has no money owing and that the seller owns it. Our guide to used equipment finance explains what lenders typically ask for with second-hand assets.

Does a balloon payment make sense on a work vehicle?

A balloon lowers your regular repayments by leaving a lump sum owing at the end of the term. Many tradies use one because they plan to trade the vehicle in after a few years anyway, and the trade-in value can go toward the balloon.

Be realistic, though. Work vehicles do hard kilometres, and if the vehicle is worth less than the balloon when the time comes, you will need to cover the gap. Set it at a level you are comfortable with.

What about GST, tax and stamp duty?

Stamp duty and registration depend on your state or territory and are usually paid at purchase. On the tax side, a GST-registered business may be able to claim GST on a vehicle used for business, and deductions may apply, but the rules around vehicles and private use can be detailed.

Your accountant is the right person to confirm how a purchase will be treated, particularly if you are buying near EOFY. Decide on the right vehicle and structure first, then check the tax side before signing.

Common questions

Ute and Van Finance for Tradies FAQs

Can a tradie get vehicle finance without tax returns?

Yes, low doc options rely on bank statements, BAS and an income declaration instead of full returns. An active ABN and steady deposits help.

Can I finance a ute from a private seller?

Many lenders allow private sales. They will usually check ownership, confirm no finance is owing and may ask for photos or an inspection.

Can I include the tray and canopy in the loan?

Usually, if they are shown on the invoice and bought with the vehicle. Ask the dealer or fitter to itemise everything.

Do I need a deposit for tradie vehicle finance?

Not always. Established tradies with good credit can often borrow the full price. A deposit or trade-in may be requested for newer ABNs or credit issues.

Can I get ute finance with bad credit?

Possibly. Lenders consider defaults and past arrears case by case, and strong recent banking helps. See our bad credit equipment finance page for more.

How soon can I pick up the vehicle?

With the invoice, licence and bank statements ready, next-business-day settlement is possible for straightforward applications. Missing paperwork is the usual cause of delay.
